Conquer the Dragon’s Tail Staircase in St George UT

St. George, Utah, has long been a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, and now there’s a new addition to its adventurous landscape—the Dragon’s Tail Staircase. This 333-step marvel, located in the Tech Ridge development, is quickly becoming a local favorite for fitness junkies, hikers, and anyone looking for a breathtaking climb—literally and figuratively.

A Stairway to Strength and Stamina

The Dragon’s Tail isn’t just about scenic views—it’s a test of endurance that’s attracting athletes and casual climbers alike. The staircase looks daunting from the bottom!  Those brave enough to tackle the challenge can expect burning calves and a serious cardio workout. Whether you’re taking it slow to enjoy the stunning desert vistas or sprinting to the top for a personal best, this staircase has something for everyone.

The Dragon’s Tail Stair Climb Challenge invites climbers to push their limits. Some aim to complete 24 laps, which is equivalent to a 5K of stairs. It's a lofty goal and quite an accomplishment when completed.  Don't be discouraged though, the staircase is fun for all levels of ability and fitness.  Take them slow and easy with lots of breaks, or leap up them skipping a step each time.

I've personally visited and climbed the staircase several times now.  I love the chance to be outside enjoying fresh air and getting my steps in for the day!  I've witnessed a variety of "climbers" while there.  Some people come with serious exercise in mind, wearing workout clothing and athletic shoes. Some climbers are "rucking" which involves climbing the stairs while carrying a weighted backpack.  I've seen some people hiking the staircase with a baby in tow safely tucked into a front facing baby carrier.  Dragon's Tail Staircase is also pet friendly, so long as your pet is on a leash!

Connecting Trails, Connecting Community

More than just a workout, the Dragon’s Tail serves as a community hub, linking existing trails such as Black Ridge Cove and Temple Quarry Trail. The staircase has already become a favorite meetup spot for runners, hikers, and weekend warriors. Built by Tech Ridge, it’s designed to blend seamlessly into the scenic beauty of Southern Utah, offering an exhilarating yet accessible outdoor challenge.

Whether you’re training, socializing, or simply appreciating the landscape, the Dragon’s Tail is a must-visit for anyone looking to take adventure—and endurance—to new heights. So, are you ready to take on the climb? Lace up, embrace the burn, and conquer the Dragon’s Tail!

Location: The Dragons Tail/ Tech Ridge Staircase is located on the west side of the bluff near Dixie Technical College. There's two options for parking, one is at the top of the stairs at Tech Ridge and the other is at the bottom of the stairs.
I like to park at the bottom so I can finish at the bottom of the stairs instead of climbing to the top when I'm through with my workout!  Here's is the Google maps link for this spot to park.  It's a short walk on an asphalt trail  to get to the bottom, Stair #1! This parking area is at the end of Walker Way in St. George.  It is just the end of a cul-de-sac in a neighborhood, not an actually parking lot.

If you'd prefer to park at the top here's the link to Google Maps for that area.
